The 2016 Saltonstall-Kennedy Competitive Research Program was designed to address the finishing communities needs to optimize economic benefits through the building and maintaining of sustainable fisheries and practices; these efforts deal with the impacts of conservation and management measures in effort to keep working waterfronts viable. Successful applicants will help fishing communities resolved fishing issues making full use of species currently under Federal or state management plans. Priority will be given to proposals that:

  • Identify singular research that reflects objectives of the proposal
  • Address on of these priorities:

– Aquaculture
– Fishery Data Collection
– Techniques for Reducing Bycatch and other Adverse Impacts
– Adapting to Climate or Ecosystem Changes
– Promotion, development and marketing
– Socio-Economic Research
– Territorial Science

Ideal projects include but are excluded to:

  • Improving catch accountability
  • Expanding fishery bio-sampling and analysis
  • Conducting Fishery Surveys
  • Building Capacity
  • Building Technical Capability

$13 million has been made available for project funding with awards ranging between $25,000 and $300,000; proposal of more than $300,000 will not be considered for funding. Award periods may not exceed two years. Eligible applicants include:

  • Citizens or nationals of the U.S.
  • Representatives of U.S. corporations through collaborative efforts
  • Citizens of the Republic of the Marshall Islands, Republic of Palau, or the Federated States of Micronesia

This opportunity does not have any cost sharing requirements. Application packages may be obtained and submitted through the Grants.gov website. Each application must include:

  • Project Narrative
  • Budget

All applications must be properly formatted. Incomplete or improperly completed applications will not be considered for funding.
