The Marine Debris Prevention through Education and Outreach Federal Funding Opportunity funds prevention projects making an effort to reduce a specific marine debris issue by increasing awareness, education, and outreach. Outreach is required to be clear, strategic, and have key messages, information, and experiences to share with their audiences. Priority is given to proposals that include hand-on participation proposals. Ideal proposal target:

  • K-12 students
  • College students
  • Inner city communities
  • Fishing communities
  • Coastal tourism industries

Low priority will be given to proposals that include large expenditures for administrative support and day-to-day operation activities. The following activities do not qualify for this grant opportunity:

  • Legally require mitigation
  • Restoration of natural resources
  • Require a separate consent decree, court order, statute, or regulation

$750,000 is available for allocation; awards typically range between $30,000 and 75,000 per project over up to a five year period.  Proposals are expected to cover the actual needs of the proposed project and may cover maximum of two years. Eligible participants include:

  • State governments
  • Local governments
  • Tribal governments
  • Higher education institutions
  • Nonprofit organizations
  • For-profit organizations

These projects have a minimum 1:1 cost match requirement unless the applicant meets the cost match waiver qualifications. Applicants must submit a letter of intent with their application The Letter of Intent  must include:

  • Applicant Organization
  • Project Title
  • Principal Investigator contact information
  • Project description
  • Geographic scope
  • Anticipated outcomes
  • Approximated Fund Request and Match Anticipated

Applicants must have permission to submit a full proposal before obtaining an application packet from Grants.gov. Applicants must registered with:
