The Great Lakes Restoration Initiative was designed to fund federal projects addressing the most significant environmental challenges in the Great Lakes ecosystem. The efforts are an attempt to improve habitat and wildlife protection and restoration in this area. Priority is given to projects with the watersheds of the Great Lakes Areas of Concern. Funding may be used for but not excluded to:
- Habitat restoration projects
- Conservation efforts of native Great Lake fish and wildlife population
- Restoration projects on privately owned lands
Grant awards typically do not exceed $25,000 per project. The program has a 50% cost sharing requirement. Eligible participants include:
- Private landowners
- U.S. nonprofit organizations
- Non-governmental organizations
Application packets may be obtained from the Grants.gov website and must be complete and submitted before the deadline.
