The purpose of the Research Using Biosamples and Subject from Type 1 Diabetes Clinical Studies Complications program is to fund studies attempting to develop a better understanding of type 1 diabetes using subjects and/or samples from type 1 diabetes clinical studies. Prioritized projects may include:
- Biomarkers serving as surrogate end-points measuring progression and regression of diabetes.
- Metabolic abnormalities of type 1 diabetes leading to a plethora of molecular, cellular and tissue changes.
- Research using biosamples previously collected or propose new sample collection.
- Specific topics include:
– Pathways specific to type 1 diabetes in the development of atherosclerotic coronary plaques
– New environmental factors that may accelerate diabetes complications
– End-points of diabetic neuropathy, retinopathy and nephropathy that could be used in clinical trials.
– Metabolic memory in type 1 diabetes contributions to biochemical and epigenetic changes
– Studies addressing hypoglycemia mechanisms and unawareness as a complication of diabetes.
Award budget typically includes $1,000,000 over a three year period. Eligible applicants include:
