Georgia Patent of the Month – March 2021

Outdoor solar lamps are fairly common, seen in gardens and street lamps. They usually use a solar module to power a light bulb. Some use incandescent light bulbs, which require large amounts of power and usually end up quite dim by the end of the night. Others use LEDs which have higher efficiencies and longer lifetimes. There are even LED light bulbs which are shaped the same as an incandescent bulb with LEDs mounted all throughout. Gama Sonic USA, Inc. has improved this design, creating an LED light bulb with a solar collector built in.

Shaped like a typical incandescent bulb, the top is lined with LEDs while the neck is lined with solar photovoltaic (PV) panels. A battery is stored in the center which collects power by day and powers the LEDs by night. The system is designed so that the bulbous portion with the LEDs angle down towards the street. The neck, with the solar PV panels is at the top, so that they are oriented towards the sun. This design enhances the PV panels access to sunlight during the day, allowing full charge of the batteries to form. The LEDs require low power levels to produce sufficient light all night. With this method, solar powered lights are more capable of providing proper illumination using solar power.
