New Mexico Patent of the Month – March 2021

Multijunction solar cells are made of stacked layers of single junction solar cells. This way, from top to bottom, each layer has a smaller bandgap than the last. This gives a more comprehensive absorption and conversion of photons. SolAero Technologies, Corp. has designed an enhanced solar cell with a window layer using the multijunction method.

Their design uses a base layer, emitter layer, and window layer. The window layer is made of semiconductor material in a latticed pattern. The lattice gaps at the top of the window are largest, and the lattice compresses towards the bottom equal to the compression of the multijunction solar cells. This combined compression helps to improve light capture throughout the cell and results in a greater solar cell efficiency. This improved conversion and efficiency is great for use on Earth as well as solar powered space equipment, which are dependent on efficiency to make the solar panels cost effective.
