Startup Develops Self-Monitoring Medical Device
Omaha startup, Centese, is a medtech company that has developed the Thoraguard. This innovative medical device is self-cleaning, self-irrigating, and self-monitoring. Through the self-monitoring function, it only alerts medical staff if it measures an excess amount of post-surgical fluid drainage, meaning hospital staff can be doing other important tasks without needing to keep a constant lookout for blockages. The device will tell staff if there are blockages, other problems like irregularities, and even leaks in the system in order to avoid complications.
The Thoraguard brings new technology to one that has remained nearly unchanged for 70 years. The current method of measuring post-surgical fluid drain is by looking at it and physically marking the container with a pen, which can be highly inaccurate. The Thoraguard will save money, time, and provide better patient care as it can more accurately monitor and provide measurements of patient’s conditions after surgery.
