Virginia Patent of the Month – November 2020

Virtual Reality gear has started to become a household item. With VR games and headsets, people can experience other worlds from their own home. But Van Gogh Imaging, Inc is trying to take the next step – holographic avatars.

They realized streaming live events takes a hefty amount of bandwidth and compression. They wanted to give everyone a better remote viewing experience using holographic avatars. Their idea involves taking a high-definition 3D scan of a rigid structure (e.g someone’s upper body) and sending it to a remote display device. Only the moving features (e.g. facial landmarks, control points) are needed in real-time to create a good rendering of the event. The video is edited and pieced together with animation software and transferred through a wireless network. Since less data is needed, it can even be transferred on a low bandwidth connection. The image is then projected, along with audio, to the holographic display device.

The possibilities are endless with this type of technology – from video games to concerts to teleconferencing – the future is now.
