The FEMA Flood Mitigation Assistance Grant Program was designed to reduce the risk of flood damage. The program provides funds to implement flood protection measures in:
- States
- Territories
- Federally-recognized tribes
- Local communities
Funds may be used for projects that minimize or eliminate flood damage risk to freestanding structures. Eligible applicants are restricted to Territories, Federally-Recognized Tribes, and States; home-owners receiving services would apply through subapplicants of the original applicants to receive assistance. Eligible activities include FMA Planning Grants and FMA Project Grants. Projects must:
- Be cost effective and beneficial
- Be technically attainable and reasonable
- Located in participating areas
- Be in accordance to NFIP Floodplain Management Regulations
- Conform with applicant’s Multi-Hazard Mitigation Plan
- Conform to all applicable laws and regulations
Eligible applicants must complete the eligibility application before applying for official funding. FEMA reviews all applications and awards funds according to the level of effectiveness of the results a project would produce. This is a highly competitive grant program that is filtered through State Mitigation Officers and federally-recognized tribal/local government officials. Participants must be granted access to the e-Grants system and electronically submit their application.
