The FY16 Nancy Foster Scholarship Program recognizes outstanding performance in masters and doctoral studies in:
- Oceanography
- Marine biology
- Maritime archaeology
- Science
- Social science
- Resources management
This program strongly encourages women and minority group members to apply. Typical awards range between $42,000 and $196,000 and up to $10,000 for collaboration with the NOAA facility with $500,000 available for allocation. Applications may be submitted electronically on Grants.gov or send a paper copy through the mail. Eligible applicants include graduate students who are U.S. citizens or permanent residents in U.S. territories with:
- Cumulative GPA of 3.3
- Must maintain GPA for the duration of the award
- Completion of 1 program collaboration for doctorial students
The participating individual must submit applications. The applicant does not need to be enrolled in a graduate program. There are no cost sharing or matching requirements and no criteria that will affect eligibility.
Scholarship recipients are required to attend the NOAA Orientation Training but will receive several benefits including:
- Becoming a recognized member of the NOAA community
- Gaining access to significant financial resources for program completion
- A camera and storyboard
– Opportunity to share research
The program prioritizes women and minorities who face challenges blocking them from pursuing an advanced degree. The main objective of the program is to increase the number of women and minorities pursing scientific careers. Awards duration is typically two years for Master’s programs and four years for Doctorial programs.
