Arizona Patent of the Month – March 2021

Designing dental prosthetic implants requires accurate 3D scans of the patient’s teeth and intraoral anatomy. The scanned object is typically a stone or plastic replica model and can be obtained from a variety of scanner methods. Global Dental Science, LLC has designed a unique scanning method relying on a universal one-piece scan body that fits in the dental impression.

Global Dental Science’s method involves a 4 step process:

  1. Secure an implant transfer body to a dental implant which is positioned in the patient’s jaw
  2. Take an impression of the patient’s jaw, creating a mold of the intraoral anatomy and the required implant
  3. Insert a scan body into the mold
  4. Acquire 3D data from the impression including position and orientation of the implant

An implant transfer body connects with a dental implant fixed in the jawbone. The other side of the transfer body has an “impression” which creates a defined cavity in a dental impression. The scan body detects these transfer bodies in the mold impression and cultivates the desired position and orientation data. This method provides a more accurate and replicable impression for dental implants. Global Dental Science’s method will allow for the enhanced design of dental prosthetics which are attached to the implants.
