Arkansas Patent of the Month – January 2021
Most people know what an IV is; you’ve either seen one in person or seen it on TV. An IV is a method of delivering liquid, either medication or other solutions, directly into a person’s bloodstream through their vein. They are very common in hospitals and have become quite advanced. They’re a faster way for a patient to receive fluids and medication, and they’ve become very small and discrete. However, sometimes patients can accidentally remove the IV, which can cause issues ranging from discomfort and pain to vein damage and haemorrhaging. If the patient tries to reconnect it without proper care, they might develop an infection. For this reason, Site Saver, Inc. has developed a breakaway tubing connector for IV equipment, so patients can rest easy when moving around.
Conventional IV systems have a section that is inserted into the patient, which is only a few inches long at most, and on that piece of equipment there is a spot for the connection of a tube that is attached to a fluid container. That connection point is usually very close to the insertion location on the patient, presenting an easy access point for bacteria. Site Saver’s breakaway tubing creates a sealed environment at the connection point for fluid to travel safely into the patient. The connection point is further from the insertion point and if a specific amount of tension along the tubing occurs, it disconnects; so the patient won’t be injured at the insertion site. When disconnection occurs, the fluid is stopped, so there are no leaks from either the patient’s tube, or the fluid bag tube; and the tube connectors stay attached to block any bacteria from entering the tubing.
Are you adapting existing technology for a new application? Did you know your development work could be eligible for the R&D Tax Credit and you can receive up to 14% back on your expenses? Even if your development isn’t successful your work may still qualify for R&D credits (i.e. you don’t need to have a patent to qualify). To find out more, please contact a Swanson Reed R&D Specialist today or check out our free online eligibility test.
