Indiana Patent of the Month – February 2021

Healing fractures and surgical management methods often require ways to promote bone growth. For instance, spinal fusion procedures can be used to correct a variety of disorders such as scoliosis, or pain caused by compressed spinal nerves. Certain molecules, like oxysterols, are deemed osteogenic and help to promote bone growth. Scaffolding is often used when directing bone growth, but is unreliable as they are often brittle materials. Warsaw Orthopedic, Inc has designed an improved implant which allows slow release of oxysterols. Their implant would be made of a biodegradable polymer, such as collagen, and includes microspheres of oxysterols. As the oxysterols are released, the collagen allows bone cells to grow and fill the cavity.

Even if your development isn’t successful your work may still qualify for R&D credits (i.e. you don’t need to have a patent to qualify).
