Michigan Patent of the Month – December 2020

Who doesn’t love a bright, sunny day? Blue skies make you want to go outside and enjoy the cloudless sunshine. But walking in the sun is very different from driving in the sun. If you’ve ever driven in those bright conditions, you’ll probably have noticed that the sun tends to obstruct your view of the road and affect your vision and driving ability. Not to mention, your arms can burn from the sun streaming through the car window. General Motors LLC has developed a window tinting system to combat sun and other light distractions while you drive to provide ultimate driving comfort.

General Motors’ system includes tinting all or part of the vehicle’s OLED windshield. Sensor detects the ambient light and a processor automatically dims the windshield. The system can also be manually adjusted, if the automatic settings aren’t to your liking. However, for safety reasons, the system has a minimum visible light transmission, so the windshield can’t be tinted below that level.

Are you adapting existing technology for a new application? Did you know your development work could be eligible for the R&D Tax Credit and you can receive up to 14% back on your expenses? Even if your development isn’t successful your work may still qualify for R&D credits (i.e. you don’t need to have a patent to qualify). To find out more, please contact a Swanson Reed R&D Specialist today or check out our free online eligibility test.
