Oklahoma Patent of the Month – April 2021
High Caliper Growing, Inc. work hard to change the way people grow plants to improve their harvest. Many household plant growers use makeshift containers like milk crates as pots. These milk crates provide a vented structure which is great for the plant growth – but not great for keeping soil in. Usually these pots are lined with newspaper or some other liner. Newspaper eventually rots and plastic liners trap too much moisture for the plant.
High Caliper has designed a fabric plant liner with pores. This fabric liner is structured like a pot, with enough rigidity to hold the plant and soil without collapsing. The pores are small enough to hold in the components but large enough to allow air and water transfer. Each pore is less than 1 mm in diameter. The fabric is non-woven and needle-punched to be porous. The act of needle-punching created a rough and fuzzy surface in the fabric which helps to capture plant roots as they grow. This capture helps to prevent roots from curling up and tangling with other roots. This contact with the liner also directs the root to begin growing a side branch rather than continuing on it’s path, creating a healthier root ball. When removing the liner, the tips of roots that have come into contact with the liner will be slightly scored/scratched. This action signals the plant to begin reproducing roots. Promoting this root health makes it easier to transport the plant when ready with rapid root establishment.
