South Dakota Patent of the Month – April 2021

Plaque is made of fat, cholesterol, and calcium among other substances. Vascular plaque can build up in the arteries, hardening over time, and blocking blood flow. Atheromatous plaque is a special vascular plaque that builds up within the inner layer of the arterial wall. Certain treatment methods, like angioplasty, use an inflatable balloon dilation catheter to expand space within the arteries so that a stent may be placed to hold the position. Unfortunately, high incidence of in-stent restenosis (ISR) is common – which is where the part of the artery with a stent gets blocked. This could lead to fatal blood clots. Alumend, LLC. has developed a compound which can help to soften the calcified plaque and improve vascular compliance overall.

The compound , made of 4-amino-1,8-naphthalimide, is delivered through a blood vessel. An activating agent follows in order to activate the composition. Based on recent research on wall shear stress(WSS) in blood vessels, Alumend began working on the idea that WSS could be a key factor in restenosis following angioplasty. Alumend’s composition penetrates both laque and vascular tissues, and softens the plaque. This softened plaque responds better to the angioplasty treatment as the WSS has been reduced. Further, the softened plaque responds so well to angioplasty that a stent is not needed. The inflatable balloon expands the arterial space, and the compound promotes a healthy WSS level. This improved environment helps to retain this new arterial space going forward and removes the need for potentially dangerous implants..

Are you developing new technology for an existing application? Did you know your development work could be eligible for the R&D Tax Credit and you can receive up to 14% back on your expenses? Even if your development isn’t successful your work may still qualify for R&D credits (i.e. you don’t need to have a patent to qualify). To find out more, please contact a Swanson Reed R&D Specialist today or check out our free online eligibility test.
