UPS to Use Beta Technologies Electric Aircrafts in Remote Deliveries

Beta Technologies has secured a deal with United Parcel Services to purchase 10 of their innovative electric aircrafts for testing. If all goes well, the deal may extend to 150 units. The first delivery of the ALIA-250 is set for 2024.

Beta Technologies has designed electric aircrafts which take-off like helicopters and fly like planes. This allows for easy vertical takeoff and landing and improves accessibility. UPS is hoping these services will reduce costs associated with deliveries to remote areas, which often require small chartered delivery planes. 

Beta’s aircrafts use four rotors on top and a propellor in the back to support 250 nautical miles on a single charge, carrying up to 1,200 lbs. These stats are limited compared to a typically freighter plane which carries 3,500 lbs across 1,200 nautical miles. However the electric aircrafts also offer reduced cost, fuel usage, and maintenance. The company is also working towards developing their aircraft as a drone, to run without a pilot.
