West Virginia Patent of the Month – February 2021
Wireline formation testing tools are used to gather information about a reservoir including permeability, mobility, and sampling. This information is needed for the production of hydrocarbon reserves. The process to produce hydrocarbons depends on the conditions of the reservoir. A typical method to stimulate hydrocarbon production is to fracture components of the reservoir to force hydrocarbons into the wellbore for collection. To fracture it, a section of the wellbore is isolated and the fluid inside is pressurized. The issue is the pressurizer remains at the surface and requires tubing to reach the isolated portion. This is very inefficient, as the distance between the wellbore section and pressurizer cause pressure loss. Pietro Fiorentini (USA), Inc has developed a method device to more efficiently test and inject Enhance Oil Recovery (EOR) substances..
Pietro Fiorentini (USA), Inc’s new formation dynamic testing (FDT) tool injects EOR substances into the wellbore reservoir from a fluid storage container on the device. For better seal between the device and the wellbore, the device is sealed to the inside wall of the wellbore and deployed using wireline cable. Wireline cable has electrical conductors which can power the tool and maintain communications conductors for data transfer. The tip of the FDT contains a probe which gathers information (e.g. pressure) and communicates hydraulically. Following testing, EOR substances are delivered to the wellbore. Following the production of hydrocarbons with the EOR substances, another sample is tested with the FDT to have both prior and post-EOR data.

Are you redesigning existing technology? Did you know your development work could be eligible for the R&D Tax Credit and you can receive up to 14% back on your expenses? Even if your development isn’t successful your work may still qualify for R&D credits (i.e. you don’t need to have a patent to qualify). To find out more, please contact a Swanson Reed R&D Specialist today or check out our free online eligibility test.
