University of Illinois selected for Funding by NASA
Each year NASA selects and funds multiple early-stage, university-led R&D projects pertaining to space technologies. Each selected project receives up to $650,000 in grants over 3 years, giving them time and resources to iterate designs, solutions, and prototypes. They recently announced their 14 selections for this year, and the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign made the cut.
Francesco Panerai of the University of Illinois will be embarking on research to enable tailored validation of fluid-structure interaction models, while improving the understanding of inflation dynamics, multi-body dynamics, and capsule wake/parachute interactions during deployment and descent. Current methods for modeling parachutes are imprecise. These parachutes have to deploy properly to ensure a soft landing. Whether people or supplies are on board, a soft landing is paramount.Panerai’s research will aim to advance these parachute capabilities by providing better insight into improved designs.
